Job Readiness/Quest/Placement
"Bob" began Readiness/Placement at UpLIFTD in 2004. He split open his liver while doing heavy lifting on his air conditioning repair job, where he had been working for 30 years. "Bob" attempted to continue his employment, but lost that job due to the heavy lifting, which he could no longer do.
Lack of a formal education was an obstacle. He left school after the 4th grade to help support his sick grandmother and had done some work on a GED, but was not able to receive HVAC certification. This further limited the possibility of re-entering the field of A/C repair.
Although "Bob" had difficulty with some Job Readiness activities such as filling out applications, UpLIFTD was confident in his employability. After 3 weeks, UpLIFTD's staff contacted a local hotel, and "Bob" received an interview. As a result of the interview training he received at UpLIFTD, he got a second interview. "Bob" was hired, and accommodations were made for his disability. "Bob" calls the staff at least once a month to let them know "he couldn't be happier". |
